My investigation starts with the figure. I want to stretch how I see and interpret the figure as well as the risks and freedoms in the painting language.
The surface of the skin gives me an unlimited subject matter for me to imply what I envision with paint. The barrier of our skin is what makes us individuals but also separates our entity from the outer world. It is what keeps us apart, from leaking out uncontrollably into the world. I want to explore the crevices, the scars, the smoothness, the youth, the wrinkles, and the textures in the skin. The more I paint the flesh of people the more I find that flesh is not all that dissimilar to the layers of paint on the canvas. Painting from figure is similar to creating the membrane of a living creature.
